Agent Sprawl Is Here: Build Your AI Agent Inventory Before It Builds Itself

When three different vendors launch agent governance products in the same week, it tells you the problem has arrived. Sales builds agents in its CRM, IT in Copilot Studio, finance in another tool — and nobody has the full list of what is running, who owns it, or what data it can reach.

Start With a Simple Register

You don't need a product to begin. A shared register with one row per agent gets you most of the value. Record:

  • Name, platform and business owner (a person, not a team).
  • Purpose — what the agent is supposed to do, in one sentence.
  • Data and systems it can access, and whether it can write or only read.
  • Credentials it uses — which account or API key, and who else shares it.
  • Monthly cost and usage.
  • Risk tier: low (internal, read-only), medium (customer-facing or writes data), high (payments, personal data, external actions).

Apply Least Privilege

Agents inherit whatever permissions their credentials carry. The most effective security step is to give each agent its own account with only the access it needs, rather than a shared admin key. Nvidia's platform design makes the same point in hardware: put the limits outside the agent, where the agent can't change them.

Govern by Risk Tier

  • Low risk: register it and review quarterly.
  • Medium risk: require an owner sign-off, logging of actions and a monthly review of errors.
  • High risk: require human approval for consequential actions, scheduled testing and a documented way to switch it off immediately.

Make Registration the Path of Least Resistance

People skip governance when it's slow. Make registering an agent a five-minute form, and make it the way people get credentials and budget approved. Then the inventory stays current because it is the easiest route, not an extra chore.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is agent sprawl?

The uncontrolled growth of AI agents built on many platforms by different teams, without a central view of what exists, who owns it or what it can access.

Do we need a governance product to manage agents?

Not to start. A shared register of every agent with owner, purpose, access, cost and risk tier covers most needs; products help at larger scale.

What is the most important agent security control?

Least privilege: give each agent its own credentials with only the access it needs, rather than shared admin keys.
