Apple Pay Is Live in India: What It Means for Your D2C Checkout

After years of delay, Apple Pay is live in India — but in a very limited form. At launch it works only with Axis Bank's Visa and Mastercard credit cards. RuPay isn't supported, and HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and SBI Card haven't joined.

Who It Actually Reaches Today

The addressable audience is iPhone users who hold an Axis credit card. In a market where UPI dominates everyday payments, that is a small slice. For a mass-market store, Apple Pay won't move conversion meaningfully yet.

Where It Can Help Now

  • Premium D2C brands whose customers skew toward iPhones and credit cards.
  • Higher-ticket purchases where customers prefer cards for rewards or EMI.
  • Stores with high mobile card-checkout drop-off, where removing card entry matters most.

What to Check Before Adding It

  • Does your payment gateway support Apple Pay in India yet, and on which plans?
  • Does your platform (Shopify, WooCommerce, custom) show the button only to eligible devices?
  • How are refunds, chargebacks and settlement handled versus your existing card flow?
  • Can you tag Apple Pay orders in analytics to measure whether conversion actually improves?

Keep UPI Front and Center

For most Indian shoppers, a fast UPI flow is still the biggest checkout lever. Treat Apple Pay as an addition for a specific audience, measure it, and revisit as more banks and RuPay support arrive.
