DoorDash has opened a US waitlist for an AI agent that takes food orders by text inside Apple's Messages app, it announced on September 30, 2026.
Order Like You'd Text a Friend
The agent uses a customer's order history and stored payment method, so a message like "order my usual protein bowl to the office" is meant to be enough. Customers can also ask for a specific dish or local recommendations, and the agent searches nearby restaurants, builds a cart and can send photos of suggestions.
Group Orders and More
It can manage group orders with mixed dietary preferences and quantities, and can suggest recipes from a photo of a fridge. DoorDash is also opening its marketplace to external workplace AI agents.
Early Bugs
Bloomberg tested an early version and found prices that differed from the app and photos that didn't match its recommendations. DoorDash says waitlist users will get a newer version.
Data Accuracy Is Everything
The errors Bloomberg found are a warning for any business letting an agent quote prices: it must read from the same live price and menu data as your app. Restaurants and retailers on these marketplaces should keep menus, prices and availability current.
