Kairos Power announced a project funding agreement with Samsung C&T, which will invest up to $100 million and provide engineering support for Hermes 2 — the Google-backed reactor Kairos is building in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
How the Investment Splits
About $70 million will be used to acquire a stake in Kairos Power. The remainder comes as an in-kind contribution of engineering services. Samsung C&T has been involved in building around ten nuclear reactors worldwide.
The Reactor
Hermes 2 is a 50-megawatt project using fluoride salt cooling and TRISO fuel. Operations are scheduled to begin in 2030.
Google's 500 MW Target
Google signed its agreement with Kairos in fall 2024, aiming to secure about 500 megawatts of nuclear capacity by 2035. Hermes 2 is the first step toward that total.
The Long Lead Time Behind AI Power
A 2030 start date for a 50 MW plant shows how far ahead hyperscalers have to plan the electricity their AI data centers will need. For cloud buyers, power availability is increasingly part of the capacity and pricing story in every region.
